Indigo Satori
Indigo dye has an extensive history in all corners of the world.
The excitement and uncertainty sensed when working with indigo dye can add more mystery & novelty to the work.
The explorations and experimentations done through out this project brought a sense of meditative flow.
When actions feel effortless the results do not dictate the fulfillment upon the path of process.
Zero-Waste Kimono
For this project my vision was to create a fully disassembled Kimono Style garment. The goal was to keep it zero-waste. So it was important to rearrange the cutting system by using varying size cut-outs that needed to be reassembled afterwards.
-
Using Optitex and making a cut order marker, It became easy to visualize the cutting &spacing for larger pieces. Next, each large piece was cut into smaller squares or rectangles.
The main gap in center was reimagined as the Tomoeri (lapel). Any small scrap was also dyed to be used as embellishment.
-
Incorporating a well know method of dyeing could feel overwhelming. However, by looking at procedures in a new way, it became easy to Feel the method or techniques rather than Executing them.
The mantra of this process became:
Let’s mediate on the FLOW and step away from OUTCOMES!

-
Incorporating a technique such as screen printing can always elevate a project and open up new creative avenues.
For this project the addition of this technique allowed for a custom printing experience. I was able to mix this method with block printing and create multiple variation of prints on the pieces.
The print was designed using several Japanese characters that were repeated and mirrored vertically or horizontally to create the full print.

-
浪人 (rōnin): Wanderer or referring to a Samurai without a master.
嵐 (Arashi): Storm
悟り(Satori): Enlightenment
-
The Wandering Samurai shall face the Storms ahead, then arrive upon a reflective enlightenment.
Repeat Pattern Block Printing
This project was intended to create a repeating pattern on a yardage of plain fabric by using the block. One key factor was to design a block which could give multiple elements, which can create a repeat and playful design.
-
The best approach to create this block was using a laser cutter for finer edges and clean cutouts.
The block was deigned with two sides that each incorporated the Japanese characters from the ancient aesthetic ideals of Japan such as Wabi Sabi & yūgen. The block design uses the reflected and reversed characters to improve repeated pattern during printing.
侘寂 (Wabi-Sabi): A sense of acceptance toward impermanence and imperfection.
幽玄 (yūgen): a sense of ambiguous mystery which emphasizes the beauty of the universe. goes here

-
The plain fabric was dyed with several colors and engaged a few different resist dying techniques.
The accidental nature of this dyeing approach brings forth the ideals of Wabi-Sabi. Also, the mystifying outcome ignites a sense of yūgen.

Textile Print Development
This project enabled designing for large scale textile patterns. The patterns have a full repeat and are suitable for various product categories. The designs were developed with a unisex apparel collection in mind.
-
The inspiration for this pattern collection was drawn from a blend of Italian Renaissance architecture and Art. Then incorporating the elements and colors with silhouettes of Contemporary Streetwear.
-
-Printed: Using methods such as Dye sublimation, Acid Dye Discharge and digital printing
-Knitted: using a flat bed knitted pattern
-Woven: Twill woven pattern
